Mother’s Day Bazaar Offers Unique Gifts For Women with Everything

Austin, TX- Looking for a unique gift for your mom or wife for Mother’s Day? Find handcrafted, sterling silver jewelry, ceramic pottery, scarves, paintings and plants at the Mother’s Day Bazaar from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the Hancock Recreation Center, 811 E. 41st Street at Red River. Some 25 local artists and artisans will be displaying their wares in the Hancock Recreation Center ballroom.

This year Americans observe Mother’s Day for the 102nd time.  American Social Activist Anna Jarvis wanted to fulfill her mother’s wish of creating a day to honor mothers. Jarvis, along with her supporters, wrote letters to people in positions of power lobbying for the official declaration of Mother’s Day holiday. Momentum grew and on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Mother’s Day is widely observed and traditionally sons and daughters purchase something special for their mom.  However, it can be a challenge figuring that special present. That is why the online jewelry boutique www.athenasilversmith.com had the idea of a venue that would be a Mecca of creativity with local artists and artisans.  So it makes sense to hold a bazaar where the public can find unique, handcrafted gifts.

Shoppers can also find Croissants Sandwiches and soft drinks on sale. For more information, contact 512-660-1845 or RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/events/1702930686644263/.

Claudio Lopez, Athena Silversmith Designer Exhibits At East Austin Studio Tour

I am among the talented artists who will exhibit  Nov. 14 and 15 and Nov. 21 and 22 at the Victory Grill, 1104 E 11th Street, Austin during the East Austin Studio Tour. My creations  are made of silver and copper and  98% of them are crafted by hand.   I  use three methods which include recycled silver jewelry, free-form jewelry and traditional jewelry.

I conscientiously use recycled silver to avoid sending it to the laboratory where metals are refined, thereby, avoiding, as in many cases in silver recycling, the contamination of the environment, I like to work with recycled silver because I create interesting forms and textures when I partially melt the diverse pieces of silver.

Using recycled silver means that I must separate all of the small pieces of silver that I have leftover when I make other pieces of jewelry and I keep them so that they do not mix with the rest of the metals.  This way I can guarantee that my jewelry is made of recycled silver and has the minimum quality for sterling silver of .925.

I make free-form jewelry when I recycle the  "new" pieces that come out of metals that I buy from the companies that sell jewelry supplies. When I melt the two metals to join them and form one piece, the metals tend to become deformed with the heat.  In this case, the exercise consists, on many occasions, of partially melting the metals by trying to conserve the forms that I like as much as possible. I don't want to destroy the original form but in this exercise there are many surprises with the new forms and, on occasions, I screw up a piece that I had liked previously.

A large part of my jewelry is made in the traditional manner, cutting and joining new pieces of silver with desired forms through soldering or the use of whatever other method to join the metal. This permits me a totally controlled way to obtain the forms that I want. I invite your to see my designs at the East Austin Studio Tour or at www.athenasilversmith.com.

How to Clean and Store Silver and Copper Jewelry/Cómo limpiar y guardar joyería de plata y cobre

How to Clean and Store Silver and Copper Jewelry

Make it your New Year’s resolution to keep your jewelry shiny and like new! Although silver and copper jewelry will last a lifetime, it can become dull when handled or exposed to dust, humidity and moisture.  So every now and then it is necessary to take the tarnish off.  This need not be a daunting task.  Here is a method that you can use with ingredients that you have at home.  (Read the notes found in the silver and copper jewelry to avoid using this mixture on the wrong pieces.)

 Ingredients                                                                                        Materials

Toothpaste                                                                                         Soft Toothbrush

Baking Soda                                                                                      Polishing Cloth or T-shirt rag

Water                                                                                                 Small Bowl

Mix a dab of toothpaste with two teaspoons of baking soda in a small bowl. Place a small amount on an old toothbrush and scrub your jewelry with this blend until you see that the piece is clean. Then rinse with water and dry thoroughly with a polishing cloth or cotton T-shirt rag.

Silver Jewelry

This method is only for sterling silver jewelry without any stones or gems. Jewelry with stones and gems could be damaged if you use this recipe.

Copper Jewelry

Copper pieces can become dull with time, but your piece can be restored to its original color with the concoction above.

Note: High mirror polished jewelry loses part of its brightness, so you must to be careful with this kind of jewelry.

Storing Jewelry

Storing jewelry in a plastic bag will prevent the silver from tarnishing since the bag protects it from coming in contact with dust, humidity and moisture.

Ingredientes                                                                                      Materiales

Pasta de dientes                                                                               Un cepillo de dientes

Bicarbonato de sodio                                                                       Un trapo para pulir o un pedazo de una playera vieja

Agua                                                                                                 Sopera chica
