Hispanic Heritage Week was first proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson  in 1968. President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988.

 This observance is also rooted in the Latin American countries that gained their  Independence from Spain in September at the beginning of the 19th century:

    • Sept. 15 Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua
    • Sept. 16 México 
    • Sept. 18 Chile

Another milestone during the 30-day period is Indigenous People's Day or Día de la Raza (formerly know as Columbus Day) on Oct. 12. This day marks the beginning of the mestizo race, persons of Hispanic and indigenous descent.
