Juneteenth commemorates the day African Americans in Texas were informed about the end of slavery, some 2 years after their freedom was guaranteed by the 13th Amendment. In Texas, on June 19, 1865  General Gordon Granger and 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, announcing that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free.

As of 2021, it became a federal holiday and has been a state holiday in Texas since 1980. Communities all over the U.S. celebrate with religious services and festivals.
